Since it was first used in Ancient Egypt, the hairbrush has barely evolved beyond some bristles on a stick. However, a number of new brands have recently launched brushes that offer a novel approach to the everyday item.

Most interesting is Killabrush, a new business that creates brushes with built-in antimicrobial technology to kill the bacteria that build up on brushes no matter how many serums, supplements or treatments you use. Killabrush is designed to support hair from the very first touchpoint, bringing a skincare-level approach to haircare.

Another new brand in the category is Orbit, a line of three pocket-sized combs – an afro comb, a wide-tooth comb for thicker hair and a fine-tooth comb – designed by London creative studio Forestalgia. Made from recycled acetate, the circular shape of Orbit’s lightweight combs, while aesthetically pleasing, also serves to reduce wrist strain and cover more surface area than traditional combs.

Finally, beloved French brush brand La Bonne Brosse celebrates summer with the launch of its Lagoon Blue colourway for five of its brush types: The Universal Brush, The Essential Daily Brush, The Indispensable Soft Brush, The Massaging Detangling Hairbrush and The Intense Brush. Each is designed for a different purpose, and the brushes are handmade at a small atelier just outside of Paris with keratin-rich boar bristles to keep hair looking healthy and feeling grease-free between washes.
